In Mallorca, a Ukrainian sailor tried to sink the yacht of his Russian employer in reaction to the invasion of his home country, according to reports.
Police on the Spanish holiday island arrested the man on Sunday, the regional newspapers Diario de Mallorca and Última Hora as well as other Spanish media reported on Monday, citing Mallorcan authorities.
The police unit the Civil Guard in Palma confirmed these reports upon request.
The crime reportedly occurred on Saturday in the upmarket port of Porto Adriano near Santa Ponsa in the south-west of the Mediterranean island.
The Ukrainian, who worked as an engine keeper on the luxury yacht Lady Anastasia, had opened several valves, among other things. The aim was to flood the engine room.
The 48-metre-long yacht, which cost about €7 million ($7.85 million), was severely damaged. There were no injuries.
In front of the judge, the man from Kiev admitted to the crime and explained that he had acted out of revenge for the Russian attack on his homeland.
'A weapons producer'
He is said to have said that his boss was a high-ranking member of a Russian company that produced weapons of war.
His house in Ukraine had been destroyed in the Russian attack, he was quoted as saying.
After the hearing, the man was let out on conditional release.
The Diario de Mallorca wrote on Monday that it had spoken to the man. He said he planned to return to Ukraine soon and fight for his country.
He had bought a plane ticket to Poland, it said. However, due to the ongoing investigations into him, he will probably not be allowed to leave Spain.
According to official figures, a total of about 2,100 Ukrainians and about 2,000 Russians live on Mallorca and the other Balearic Islands.
