Spain's King Felipe VI has tested positive for the coronavirus.

The monarch has only mild symptoms of the disease and is "doing well," the royal family in Madrid announced on Wednesday.

The 54-year-old has cancelled all appointments for the next seven days and will be in isolation at his Zarzuela Palace. However, the head of state will continue to fulfil his official duties.

Queen Letizia, 49, as well as the younger daughter, the Infanta Sofía, 14, are not affected and can continue their activities, the royal family said.

The elder daughter, Crown Princess Leonor, 16, is currently attending a boarding school in Britain.

Spain is currently in a waning phase of its sixth coronavirus wave. The seven-day incidence rate of new infections is 675 after a peak in mid-January of more than 1,600.
