Former Spanish king Juan Carlos is to visit his home country for the first time in two years, authorities have confirmed.

"The king will be here this weekend," the mayor of the port city of Sanxenxo in Galicia, Telmo Martín told journalists on Tuesday.

The 84-year-old former monarch has been living in exile in Abu Dhabi since August 2020. He will attend an international regatta event in the city. "I do not know if as a spectator or as a participant, but he will be here," Martín said.

This information has not yet been confirmed by the royal family or the Spanish government.

Juan Carlos has been living in exile, far from his 83-year-old wife Sofía and the rest of the family, including his son and Spanish King Felipe VI.

The man who was Spain's head of state between 1975 and 2014 secretly left his home country on August 3, 2020, in order to "facilitate" Felipe's work as criminal accusations about allegedly irregular financial dealings mounted against Juan Carlos.

Remain in exile

At the beginning of March, after all criminal investigations against him had been dropped, Juan Carlos announced that he would remain in exile for the time being, but would soon visit Spain.

It is still unclear whether Juan Carlos will meet his son in Madrid. According to reports, Felipe had agreed to meet Juan Carlos during his next visit.
