Swedish police said on Saturday they have detained a taxi driver on suspicion of attempted murder after he drove into a group of people in Borlange, a town north-west of Stockholm.

Four people were injured and three taken to hospital after the incident, which occurred late on Friday. Health authorities said the three - two men and a young woman - were not seriously injured.

The cause and possible motive of the incident is under investigation, but police said it was not being treated as terrorism.

Bystanders apprehended the taxi driver, a man in his 30s, before police arrived at the scene, police said.

Borlange is about 200 kilometres north-west of the Swedish capital.
