Twice Oscar nominated Max von Sydow is dead, French magazine Paris Match reported. His wife, the filmmaker Catherine von Sydow, has told the magazine.
The actor was 90 when he died.
Von Sydow appeared in over a hundred films and television series.
He became known for his collaboration with renowned director Ingmar Bergman. Von Sydow made 11 films with Bergman, including the films Strawberry Place and The Seventh Seal, in which he famously played chess with Death.
However, it was 1973’s The Exorcist –riffing off a lifetime playing wracked men of God– which catapulted von Sydow to international acclaim.
Game of Thrones
More recently he appeared in Star Wars: The Force Awakens (2015) and in Game of Thrones (2016) as the mystical Three-Eyed Raven.
Von Sydow received two Oscar nominations.
The first one was in 1987 Swedish domestic drama Pelle the Conqueror (Pelle Valloittaja) for the best actor. The second one was in 2011 Extremely Loud and Incredibly Close, this time as supporting actor.
The actor has two sons from his first wife Christina Inga Britta Olin. In 1997, he married Catherine Brelet and became a French citizen five years later but when he got French citizenship, he had to relinquish his Swedish citizenship.
