Sweden hands life sentence to man who decapitated his girlfriend
The court also unanimously ruled that he had violated the corpse of the 17-year-old girl.
A Swedish court on Monday handed a life sentence to a man found guilty of murder after his 17-year-old girlfriend's decapitated head was found in their flat in November.
Wilma Andersson was reported missing on November 17 in Uddevalla, western Sweden.
The 23-year-old defendant killed his girlfriend "with intent," the Uddevalla district court said.
Andersson was killed following lengthy violence, the ruling added.
The defendant had denied severing Andersson's head, but his fingerprints were found on the packaging the head was wrapped in.
He was charged with murder after Andersson's head was found in a suitcase in their flat over a week after her disappearance.
The court also unanimously ruled that he had violated the corpse.
No other remains found
No other remains of Andersson's body have been found. This has posed a great strain on her loved ones, the court said.
The defendant recently underwent a forensic psychiatric examination, which found that he was accountable. The court said there were no mitigating circumstances.
"I can conclude that the court shared our assessment," prosecutor Jim Westerberg said, noting that the prosecution had requested a life sentence.
According to court documents, the defendant was born in a Kurdish region in northern Iraq and came to Sweden when he was eight. He grew up in Uddevalla with his father and stepmother.
The trial opened on May 26.
