Lithuania slams EU's failure to implement Belarus sanctions
Lithuanian President Gitanas Nauseda has slammed the European Union's failure to implement sanctions against the Belarusian government as "inappropriate."
It has been close to six weeks since the bloc agreed to the measures, Nauseda said on the way into an EU summit in Brussels, and the situation in Belaurs continues to deteriorate.
Several Baltic states, Britain and Canada have already applied measures, he said.
It is "inappropriate" for the EU, which shares borders with Belarus, not to have reacted to the situation there, according to Naudeas. The Lithuanian leader said he expects a "principled solution" to the matter on Thursday.
Moreover, the EU should help Belarus prepare for the "post-Lukashenko" era, a reference to incumbent President Alexander Lukashenko.
According to draft resolutions drawn up by the European Council, President Charles Michel also wants leaders to agree to implement the measures "without delay."
