French police on Monday shot dead a knife-wielding man who threatened them in a Paris train station.

Two officers fired their weapons after the man with the knife approached them, police sources said, adding the officers were unhurt.

The knife's blade was about 30 centimetres long, the sources said.

Interior Minister Gérald Darmanin said the officers had "averted danger to themselves and the passengers."

A short video clip posted on Twitter, which could not be immediately verified, showed uniformed officers walking through the Gare du Nord train station before the shots are heard.

The station is one of the busiest in the French capital and handles international connections, including the Eurostar service to London.
