Tourist overnight stays in Finnish establishments marked a sharp drop in January 2021 compared to the same month last year, but with an uneven development depending on the origin of demand.
According to Statistics Finland, overnight stays by foreign tourists declined by 92.7% and 50,000 nights were recorded, while stays by resident tourists declined 34.3% and 630,000 nights were recorded for them.
Finnish accommodation establishments recorded a total of 680,000 million overnight stays, which was 59.2% lower than one year before.
Overnight stays did not increase from any of the most important foreign markets.
The biggest drop was seen in overnight stays by Russians , down by 163,500 nights. Their overnight stays were 98.9% down on January 2020. The smallest drop was seen in overnight stays by Norwegians , down by 6,200 nights.
The biggest group of non-resident tourists were Estonians with 9,600 overnight stays. The second largest group was Germans with 6,100. The third largest group was Swedes with 4,300 overnight stays, and fourth were US tourists with 2,700 overnight stays.
Accommodation establishments in Uusimaa recorded 24,000 overnight stays by non-resident tourists and accommodation establishments in Lapland 7,000. Overnight stays by non-resident tourists declined by 89% in Uusimaa. In Lapland, overnight stays by non-resident tourists declined by 97.8%.
Nights in hotels
The share of Uusimaa in all overnight stays by foreign visitors was 46% and that of Lapland 13%.
The total number of nights spent in hotels was 530,000, which was 62.8% less than twelve months earlier. Overnight stays in hotels by foreign tourists declined by 92.7% to 44,000. Recorded nights spent by resident tourists in hotels numbered 490.000, down 41% from one January 2020.
These figures are preliminary data from Statistics Finland’s statistics on accommodation establishments and they have been collected from accommodation establishments with at least 20 beds or caravan pitches with electricity connection.
