The overnight stays of travelers in Spanish hotel establishments exceeded 13.6 million in February, according to fresh data from the Spanish National Institute of Statistics (INE).
This is 458.9% more compared to the same month of 2021, when in the midst of the Covid-19 pandemic there were only 2.4 million.
Depending on the origin of the travellers, in February more than half of these stays were carried out by international tourists. Overnight stays by non-residents exceeded 7.5 million, while those of resident travelers exceeded 6 million (44.2%) of the total.
The average length of stay for visitors also increased by 28.2% compared to February 2021, to 2.6 overnight stays per traveler.
During the first two months of 2022, overnight stays increased by 393.3% compared to the same period of the previous year.
Destinations
In February, the main destinations for travelers residing in Spain were Andalusia, Madrid and Catalonia, with 21%, 14% and 13.4% of total overnight stays, respectively.
On the other hand, the main destination chosen by non-residents was the Canary Islands, with 50.9% of the total overnight stays. This was predictable given that February is a winter month and many of those who visit Spain - especially tourists from northern Europe - come in search of sun.
The following destinations preferred by non-residents were Catalonia and Andalusia, with 15.2% and 11.5% of total overnight stays, respectively.
