Around 450 cabin staff stationed in Barcelona, Palma de Mallorca and Málaga will go on strike to demand a pay increase of at least 40%

Easyjet cabin staff are to go on strike in July for more pay, putting pressure on the European budget airline at the height of the holiday season, Spain's USO trade union said in Madrid on Tuesday.

The strikes are planned between July 1 and 3, between July 15 and 17, and again between July 29 and 31, in support of a pay increase of at least 40%.

The British airline is reported to have around 450 cabin staff in Barcelona, Palma de Mallorca and Málaga.

Basic pay was currently €950 ($1,000) per month, USO Easyjet representative Miguel Galán said.

This was €850 less than in Germany or France, while the Easyjet staff were stationed in Spanish cities with a high cost of living, he added.

Longer flying times

"We can barely pay the rent or the mortgage with the basic pay," Galán said. Staff were compelled to work longer hours, resulting in less rest and longer flying times.

Pay talks have stalled, with the company showing no interest in improving conditions for its workers in Spain, he said.

USO is also demanding a limit to hours worked as imposed in other countries, along with more frequent replacement of work clothes.
