From Saturday onwards, Denmark is to open for travel to and from the southern Swedish region of Skane, the Danish Foreign Ministry said on Thursday.

The region of Skane, which includes Sweden's third-largest city, Malmo, has sufficiently low infection rates to allow travel, according to the Foreign Ministry's statement.

Most of Sweden, however, remains barred, as infections were higher than the accepted rate of at most 20 new coronavirus infections per 100,000 inhabitants per week.

Denmark opened for permanent residents of the southern Swedish regions of Blekinge and Kronoberg, and the northern Swedish region of Vasterbotten.

Closed since mid-March

"This is terrific, we are back where we were at on March 13 when Denmark closed its borders for Swedes," Carl Johan Sonesson, chairman of the Skane regional council board, told Swedish broadcaster SVT.

Denmark closed its borders in mid-March as part of measures to limit the spread of the virus, but has gradually eased the restrictions for many European countries.

The Foreign Ministry, however, revised its travel warning for Luxembourg, advising against non-essential travel due to rising infection rates there.
