Last year’s NFL champion Kansas City Chiefs and their star quarterback Patrick Mahomes have agreed to a 10-year contract extension worth $450 million, according to NFL Network Insider Ian Rapoport and NFL Network's Tom Pelissero.
Mahomes gets 450 million dollar "in so-called new money" over the 10-year extension. Plus 28 million dollar covered by the two remaining years on his rookie contract. He will get a 10 million dollar signing bonus, then has large roster bonuses on a rolling guaranteed basis in future years, which includes a massive 49.4 million dollar bonus due in 2026.
In 2017 Kansas City Chiefs drafted Patrick Mahomes in the first round, number 10 overall. At that time some people criticized the Chiefs’s decision. Their general idea was Mahomes was not an A-class quarterback and Chief’s wasted their first round.
After famously sitting his first season, Mahomes has set the NFL on fire the past two years. Last year his team won the Super Bowl and he named MVP. Mahomes averages 302.4 passing yards per game, the most in NFL history. He is the youngest player to win the Super Bowl MVP and the highest passer rating in NFL history at 108.9.
The extension makes Patrick Mahomes the NFL’s highest-paid player; its 45 million dollar average annual value easily surpasses the 35 million dollar per-year average of quarterback Russell Wilson’s four-year, 140 million dollar contract with the Seattle Seahawks.
Turning 25 in September, Mahomes will be 36 when his new contract ends. 36 is a middle-age for NFL. Tom Brady, another star QB, is 42 years old and signed a two-year, 50-million-dollar deal with Tampa Bay Buccaneers. Drew Brees is 41 years old and he is New Orleans Saints's first QB.
