At least one German found cause for celebration in the 1-0 defeat to France to open Euro 2020 on Tuesday - Mats Hummels' young son.

Ludwig Hummels - aged 3 - celebrated father Mats' scoring the only goal of the game not realizing it was at the wrong end of the pitch.

"Thankfully he does not yet know what an own goal is," Hummels told the Bild newspaper on Friday.

"He thinks putting the ball in the net is always right.

"It was told to me that he celebrated. I will have to explain it to him."

'The most unpleasant'

The 32-year-old Hummels turned a drilled cross from Lucas Hernandez beyond keeper Manuel Neuer and admitted it was "perhaps the most unpleasant" type of ball a defender had to deal with.

Germany play their second game of the championships against Portugal in Munich on Saturday.
