Christian Eriksen’s contract with Italian champions Inter Milan was terminated by mutual agreement on Friday, in the wake of the Denmark player's cardiac arrest at the Euro tournament in June.

Eriksen, 29, suffered cardiac arrest during Denmark's game with Finland in Copenhagen and had to be resuscitated.

He had a heart starter implanted but such a device is prohibited in Italian football.

Eriksen could continue playing in another league and is currently training at Odense where he played as a teenager.

"FC Internazionale Milano can confirm that an agreement has been reached to terminate Christian Eriksen's contract by mutual consent. The club and the entire Nerazzurri family wish Christian all the very best for his future," Inter said in a statement.

'Good  times, goals'

"Although Inter and Christian are now parting ways, the bond shall never be broken. The good times, the goals, the victories, those Scudetto celebrations with fans outside San Siro – all this will remain forever in Nerazzurri history."

Eriksen joined Inter in January 2020 after seven years at Tottenham on a contract until 2024. He scored eight goals in 60 games in all competitions and helped Inter win the 2021 Serie A title.

"Christian was a key figure in our march to the Scudetto – a team effort which Eriksen contributed to with his vision, intuition, passing, assists and goals, including some big ones," Inter said in a separate farewell message.
