Spaniard fined for entering unauthorized area of Russian border
A patrol of Finland's South East Border Guard fined a person on Thursday 17 October after detecting him wandering in the border-zone of Nuijamaa (Lappeenranta) without a permit.
The case was reported by the Border Guard (Rajavartiolaitos) in its bulletin on Monday 21 October.
According to the Border Guard's explanation, the suspect was "immediately detected by the border patrol at the time of the incident". He turned out to be a Spanish man who was fined for a minor border offence.
The man explained to the border guards that he only intended to take some souvenir photos of the border boundary between Finland and Russia.
Along the border areas, yellow signs warn people in several languages when they are entering a restricted area and need a permit.
