Spain: Putin must be brought before the International Criminal Court
The Spanish government believes that Russian President Vladimir Putin may have committed very serious crimes by ordering the invasion of neighboring Ukraine.
For this reason, the government in Madrid has agreed to request the prosecutor of the International Criminal Court (ICC) to investigate whether crimes have been committed in Ukraine that are under the supervision of the court.
The Spanish Minister of Territorial Policy and Government spokesperson, Isabel Rodríguez, said after the meeting of the Council of Ministers that the Russian president, Vladimir Putin, "will be held accountable before the International Criminal Court."
Her words were included in the weekly press release that summarizes the content of the Council of Ministers and published on the La Moncloa website.
Rodriguez also asked the court to "investigate alleged war crimes, crimes against humanity or genocide that could have been committed against the Ukrainian people."
Spanish investigation
Rodríguez stressed that Spain is one of the 38 countries that has joined this action in solidarity with the Ukrainian people after "the escalation of atrocities committed during the (Russian) invasion."
Rodríguez has also highlighted that the Spanish Prosecutor General's Office has also initiated its own investigation to assess the consequences of the invasion of Ukraine within the scope of Spanish legislation.
