The Spanish Ministry of the Interior has recorded, processed and granted temporary protection to 5,830 people displaced by the war in Ukraine.
This is, until today, the number of Ukrainian refugees who have received this status. The Spanish government activated on 10 March an emergency mechanism for refugees.
Of these, 2,416 have received temporary protection after processing their petitions at the reception centers in Pozuelo de Alarcón (Madrid) and Alicante. Another 3,414 requests have been registered and resolved in the 54 National Police stations that have been authorized for these procedures throughout Spain.
All temporary protection concessions entail a residence permit and, for those of legal age, a work permit.
These figures have been announced by the Minister of the Interior, Fernando Grande-Marlaska, during a visit on Friday to the reception center located in Pozuelo de Alarcón (Madrid). The minister has guaranteed that all the human and material resources necessary to register, process and resolve petitions will continue to be allocated.
Humanitarian emergency
"Spain has given a great example of institutional coordination, solidarity and agility to respond with the efficiency and speed that a humanitarian emergency of these characteristics demanded and that the Ukrainian population deserved", the minister pointed out.
In addition to this center, applications for international protection in Spain can be processed at the reception centers set up in Barcelona and Alicante, and at the Immigration Offices of the Provincial Police Stations of all the provincial capitals, as well as at the police stations of Algeciras, Gijon and Vigo.
