Spanish star architect Ricardo Bofill died on Friday at the age of 82, his office in Barcelona confirmed.
A Catalan, Bofill was an opponent of the rationalist and uniform architectural style.
In Barcelona, he designed, among other things, the airport, the Catalan National Theatre and the Barcelona Hotel at the harbour, whose outer form is reminiscent of a sail.
He also caused a stir with international works such as the Citadel Center in Chicago and the conversion of an old cement factory near Barcelona into a unique loft and architecture studio.
