In fact, the song is a Soviet Slow march composed by Eduard Kolmanovski for a poem by the poet Konstantin Vanšenkin, published back in 1956 in the afternoon newspaper Komsomolskaya Pravda.
The Russian text goes through the Soviet socialist values of the 1950s, such as the importance of the family, friendship and the victory of World War II. The song became very popular in the Soviet Union in the 1950s and in Finland in the 1960s.
Cosmonaut Yuri Gagarin (the first man in space) named it his favorite song, and Finnish president Martti Ahtisaari sang it after his victory in the 1994 presidential election.
