Despite the restrictions derived from the coronavirus epidemic, such as the road closure of the Uusimaa province, March registered an increase in the number of traffic accidents.
According to preliminary data of Statistics Finland, 231 accidents involving personal injury happened in road traffic in March. In them, 20 persons were killed and 270 persons injured. The number of persons killed was six higher than in March 2019 and also three higher than in February and January 2020.
Of the persons who were killed, 16 traveled by passenger car. Pedestrians killed in road traffic accidents numbered one and cyclists two. In addition, one other road user was killed. Among those who died, 16 were men and four were women.
54 dead so far in 2020
A total of 764 road traffic accidents involving personal injury happened in January to March period.
In them, 54 persons were killed and 953 persons injured. The number of persons killed was 14 higher and that of persons injured 54 lower than in the corresponding period of 2019.
Of the persons who were killed, 33 traveled by passenger car, three by van, one by motorcycle and one by lorry. Pedestrians killed numbered nine and cyclists four. In addition, three other road users were killed.
