Police investigate child drowning in Porvoo pool as wrongful death
The police are investigating the activity of those responsible for security at the time the event occurred.
Investigators are asking two women who were in the swimming hall near the place where the boy drowned to contact the police.
The East Uusimaa Police Department has made progress in investigating the death of a 7-year-old boy by drowning last week at the Porvoo swimming pavilion.
The unfortunate event happened when the child was participating with other classmates in an after-school activity in the public swimming pool. He drowned without any of the people present noticing. At that moment in the pool were his caregivers, classmates, the pool lifeguards and other users of the facility.
According to the latest police information, investigators have seized video surveillance recordings of the swimming pool and carried out several interrogations.
From the video recordings, the police say they "have obtained a clear picture" of the course of events, which will be further clarified by more interrogations.
The police consider it proven that the boy was participating in a guided activity in the pool in the city of Porvoo, where both the personnel responsible for the extracurricular activity and the swimming supervisors of the pool were present.
"A human tragedy"
According to the police explanation, "the role of the police in this human tragedy is to find out all the facts and details related to what happened."
In the course of the investigation, the police are examining the activity of those responsible for security at the time of the "tragedy", as well as the structural security of the premises. The investigation is carried out under the title of wrongful death, which is when one person or entity's wrong acts cause someone's death.
Investigators are asking two women who were in the swimming hall near the place where the boy drowned to contact the police at 0295 436442.
