The good smell of a police dog made it possible for a woman from Lapland to return home safely after getting lost during an excursion to pick berries in central Finland on Monday 29 July.
At 12:07 in the afternoon, the police received a report about a person who had got lost on a berry picking trip near the municipality of Iisalmi, in the Finnish region of Northern Savonia.
According to a police bulletin, the victim was a 68-year-old woman from Lapland, who had called the emergency center herself. She said that she was not in real danger to her life or health, but completely lost. Police officers contacted the woman by telephone and asked her to wait and avoid using the phone in order to save the battery power.
On the basis of telephone tracking, the police were given a restricted search area and a police dog patrol started the search from the car used by the woman and her husband. At 15:00 the dog patrol found the woman after tracking just half a kilometer. After hydration and emergency care, the police officers concluded she was in good state.
Police remind berry pickers about a few basic things: charge the phone battery fully before enterning nature. If you own a smartphone, download the 112 application to help locate you in case of any emergency.
