2019 was not a good year for the car industry in Finland. Despite a significant increase in sales recorded in December, which has allowed the fall to be corrected a bit, private car registrations decreased 5.2% year-round.
The total number of vehicles first registered in the January to December period was 189,008. Compared to the year before, there was a decrease of 1.5%.
Among them, 114,199 passenger cars were first registered in 2019, which is 5.2% down from the year before. Overall, Finland recorded eight consecutive months of declines in passenger car sales, which only grew in the last four months of the year.

33% rise in December
In December 2019 a total of 12,965 new motor vehicles were registered in Finland, of which 9,639 were automobiles. First registrations increased by 20.7% from the corresponding month of the previous year. Among them, the number of new passenger cars registered was 8,213, which was 33.2% up from the year before.
The share of new diesel-driven passenger cars was 18%. These data are based on the Traffic Affairs Register of the Finnish Transport and Communications Agency (Traficom) and they have been produced by Statistics Finland. The numbers are exclusive of the vehicles on the Åland Islands.
The most common passenger car makes first registered in the January to December period were Toyota, Volkswagen and Skoda.
