Finland was shaken on Saturday night by an unusual traffic crime that ended up causing the death of two people. A 'kamikaze' driver traveling on Ring Road III (Kehä III) in the opposite direction caused a serious accident between Bembole and Järvenperä shortly before 23:00.
According to information from the Länsi-Uusimaa Police Department, after 22:40 the emergency center received several reports about a car detected on Ring Road III traveling in the wrong direction. The first reports came from the area near Tammisto, in Vantaa.
The car was moving at a variable speed between 40 and 100 kilometers per hour, police said in a statement. A police patrol driving in its own lane alongside the driver reached him at Koskelo and tried to get him to stop over the middle wing.
But he didn't stop. The driver continued traveling alongside the patrol car to the section of the road between the intersections of Järvenpää and Bemböle, where he collided with another car. A 52-year-old man and a 46-year-old woman were killed in the crash.

Estonian driver
According to an eyewitness, the car was a BMW X5 SUV with Estonian registration. Police confirmed to the press that it was a BMW and also said that the driver was an Estonian man born in 1973.
The driver was injured in the collision and taken to a hospital for treatment. Alcohol also played its part in the event.
At this stage of the investigation he is suspected of a crime of aggravated endangerment of traffic safety, aggravated drunk driving and aggravated homicide.
The Länsi-Uusimaa Police Department are requesting observations from eyewitnesses.
