Foreign woman stabbed in child custody dispute
The victim was referred to Kuopio University Hospital (KYS) and the suspect was later caught in the nearby.
The Eastern Finland police department is investigating a stabbing in the city of Kuopio.
The crime occurred on Thursday on Tehdaskatu Street in Kuopio, in the southern Haapaniemi district, more specifically on the section of the street between S-Market and Lidl supermarkets.
According to police information, shortly after 2:00 PM a woman in her 30s living in Kuopio was stabbed in the upper body several times with a blade weapon by a man in his 40s coming from outside the municipality.
The victim suffered several life-threatening injuries and was referred to Kuopio University Hospital (KYS). The suspect was later caught by the police in the nearby.
"Intense violence"
Police reported on Thursday that both the victim and her assailant knew each other and the act seem to be planned and executed with "intense violence." Therefore, it was being investigated as a murder attempt.
On Friday, Police reported that the victim and the suspect "are a former married couple and they are both foreign nationals." The assailant was heard on Friday and admitted the act, but denied having attempted to kill the woman.
Divorce and child custody
The victim sustained serious upper body injuries, but according to current information her life is no longer in danger.
Police said she was also heard on Friday. The act is likely motivated by a dispute over divorce and child custody.
The handle of the steel weapon used to commit the crime is still missing.
