Sea transport in Finland started the year with a drop.

According to the latest figures published by Statistics Finland, the goods volume of foreign sea transport was in total 7.7 million tonnes in January 2021, which is 7% less than in last year's January, a month prior to the outbreak of the coronavirus pandemic.

The fall affected, above all, imports from abroad, which contracted by a percentage that was double that of exports.

According to official figures, exports decreased by 5% and were 4.1 million tonnes. Import volume decreased by 10% and amounted to 3.6 million tonnes.

General cargo was transported most, in total 1.4 million tonnes, which is 18% of all transport. The second most transported was oil products, 1.1 million tonnes, and crude oil, 0.9 million tonnes.

Container transport down 10%

A total of 1.0 million tonnes of containers were transported through Finnish ports in January 2021, which is 10% less than in January 2020. The number of containers transported was 70,390 (124,102 TEU containers .

Exports of containers went down by 13% measured in tonnes and imports went down by 2% compared to January 2020.

Vehicle transport

A total of 157,532 transport equipment were transported in foreign sea traffic in January 2021. Most transports of transport equipment were passenger cars belonging to passengers. In January, 70,700 passenger cars were transported.

The second most transported were trucks, 51,257 and truck trailers, 32,773.

Passenger traffic

A total of 243,626 persons were transported in passenger traffic in January 2021. In all, 161,830 persons travelled between Finland and Estonia and 77,851 persons between Finland and Sweden and 3,945 passengers between Finland and Germany.

Passengers made up only 23% of the number of passengers in January 2020. In January 2021, no passengers of foreign cruise ships arrived in Finland.

Saimaa Canal

A total of 61,164 tons of transport were registered through the canal in foreign traffic. Timber was transported most in vessels in foreign traffic, in total 18,745 tonnes. The second most transported was crude minerals and cement.
