POPULATION

Number of immigrants arriving in Finland triples that of emigrants

The number of births was 7,410 lower than that of deaths.

According to Statistics Finland's preliminary data, Finland's population was 5,535,605 at the end of November. The country's population increased by 10,313 people during January-November.

The number of births was 7,410 lower than that of deaths. Therefore, "the reason for the increase was migration gain from abroad, since immigration exceeded emigration by 17,547," the statistics office says in a press release.

In fact, the number of people who emigrated to Finland between January and November is almost three times higher than the number of people who left the country (including Finnish citizens).

The coronavirus crisis has caused fewer people to come to Finland this year than last year, but it has also prevented many who wanted to leave from doing so.

Immigrants, emigrants

According to the preliminary statistics for November, 28,299 persons immigrated to Finland from abroad in January-November and 10,752 persons emigrated from Finland.

The number of immigrants was 2,344 lower than in the corresponding period of the previous year. And the number of emigrants was 5,182 lower year-over-year. In all, 8,632 of the immigrants and 7,121 of the emigrants were Finnish citizens.

During January-November, 42,776 children were born in Finland, which is 742 higher than in the corresponding period in 2019. But the number of deaths was 50,186, which is also 998 higher than one year earlier.
