Finland in figures 2019: pocket information about your host country

Statistics Finland has published 'Finland in Figures 2019', a publication that summarizes key statistical figures about the Finnish society and the Finns into a pocket-size information package.

Would you like to have all the basic information about your host country in one document? The Finnish statistical office has published 'Finland in Figures 2019'. This is the latest edition of a yearly publication that summarizes the key statistical figures about the Finnish society and the Finnish people into a pocket-size information package.

The renewed package of information includes rich data sections on the Finnish population, economy, society and the environment.

In addition to Statistics Finland’s contribution, 'Finland in Figures' contains data produced by other institutions such as the National Institute for Health and Welfare, the Natural Resources Institute of Finland, the Customs, the Social Insurance Institution and the Finnish Centre for Pensions.

Extracts from data in 'Finland in Figures 2019'

  • At the end of 2018, the total population of Finland was 5,517,919 persons, of whom 2,794,629 were women and 2,723,290 men.
  • Persons over 100 years of age numbered 889, of whom 754 were women and 135 men.
  • The most popular first names in 2018 were Eevi for girls and Eeli for boys.
  • In 2018, the biggest age group was those aged 55 to 59. For women, the biggest age group was those aged 65 to 69 and for men those aged 35 to 39.
  • Average life expectancy at birth was 84.3 years for girls and 78.9 years for boys in 2018 according to preliminary data.
  • The average household-dwelling unit size in 2018 was 1.99 persons per household-dwelling unit.
  • Last year, the proportion of those living alone was 44 per cent of all household-dwelling units. In total, 28,557 of those living alone had turned 90.
  • In 2018 there were 125,843 Finnish citizens with dual nationality.

  • For household-dwelling units with housing loans, the average housing loan was EUR 98,740 per household-dwelling unit in 2017. The average age of first-time homebuyers was 28.7 years.
  • The share of persons at risk of poverty was 12.1 per cent of the entire population in 2017.
  • In Finland, 95 per cent of companies were small in 2017, employing less than 10 persons.
  • In 2018 there were 35,035 enterprise openings in Finland.
  • Forty-nine per cent of pensioners had a smart phone in their own use in 2018.
  • The automobile stock in 2018 was 4,151,275.
  • Persons aged between 15 to 69 spent 22 minutes reading books and 222 minutes on the Internet per day in 2017.
  • The rates of persons aged 20 to 64 who smoke daily was 15% for men and 13% for women in 2018.
  • 83 per cent of persons aged 16 to 89 used online banking in the three months previous to the data collection. 

  • Ninety-nine per cent of municipal waste was recovered in 2017.
  • According to preliminary data for 2018, renewable energy accounted for 37 per cent of total energy consumption.
  • In 2018, general government debt's share of GDP in Finland was 58.9 per cent. The share of debt had decreased by 2.4 percentage points from 2017. Among EU countries, the share of debt was lowest in Estonia, 8.4 per cent, and highest in Greece, 181.1 per cent.
  • The share of the Euro area in Finland's exports was 38% in 2018, according to preliminary data.
  • 13% of the employees worked remotely daily or weekly in 2017.
