Helsinki will host the European Space Week on 3-5 December. According to Ministry of Economic Affairs and Employment, this is the largest event for European space programmes in 2019. It brings together companies, research organisations, policy-makers, international experts and the space application user community from across Europe.
The event will present the latest achievements of the European Union’s space programmes Copernicus, EGNOS and Galileo and the new opportunities created by the transformation of the space sector (the New Space Economy).
Sustainability
The main topics, panel discussions, networking events, business presentations and exhibitions will show how space solutions can contribute to sustainable growth and a sustainable future.
The main themes of this year’s European Space Week are:
- How space solutions can support climate action.
- A new space economy for sustainable growth.
- A sustainable space economy
- Space solutions for a sustainable Arctic.
International experts
Organised by the European Commission, the European Space Week is a side event of Finland’s Presidency of the Council of the EU. The event will take place at Helsinki Congress Paasitorni.
It is organised in cooperation with the European Space Agency (ESA), the European GNSS Agency (GSA), AZO Anwendungszentrum GmbH Oberpfaffenhofen, the Ministry of Economic Affairs and Employment, the Ministry of Transport and Communications, the Finnish Meteorological Institute, Finnish Transport- and Communications Agency (Traficom), VTT Technical Research Centre of Finland and the Finnish Centre of Excellence in Research of Sustainable Space.
The European Space Week plenary session will be opened by former President Tarja Halonen. The first panel session brings together Directors-General from the European Commission, ESA, the French government space agency CNES, GSA, the European Centre for Medium-Range Weather Forecasts (ECMWF) and the Finnish Meteorological Institute to discuss how space solutions can help combat climate change.
Other keynote speakers include CEO Hasan Malik from Cloud Asset Oy, CSO and Co-Founder Pekka Laurila from Iceye, Professor Minna Palmroth from the Finnish Centre of Excellence in Research of Sustainable Space, Vice President Regulatory Affairs Ruth Pritchard-Kelly from OneWeb and Director Jouni Pulliainen from the Finnish Meteorological Institute.
The concluding address will be given by Minister of Economic Affairs Katri Kulmuni. The panellists are leading experts from the business and research sectors.
