Car sales continue to decline at the start of 2021

The most common passenger car makes first registered in January were Toyota, Skoda and Volvo.

The new year 2021 started just like the previous one for car dealerships: with a drop in sales.

According to Statistics Finland's data, a total of 15,227 new motor vehicles were registered in January 2021, of which 11,033 were automobiles. First registrations decreased by 6.8% from the corresponding month of the previous year.

But the drop is much greater when it comes to the market of passenger cars. In January the number of new passenger cars registered was 9,373, which was 13.2% down from the year before.

Electric cars

The share of new electric passenger cars was 3.8% and plug-in hybrid electric cars 19.2%. A total of 2,153 new electric and plug-in hybrid electric cars were registered, which was 49.2% up from the same month of 2020.

The most common passenger car makes first registered in January were Toyota, Skoda and Volvo. The most common passenger car models were Skoda Octavia, Toyota Yaris, Toyota Corolla, Toyota Rav4 and Volvo XC40.
