Alko's sales jumped to a historic growth rate in March because of coronavirus (koronavirus, in Finnish). Passenger traffic from Finland to abroad is at a standstill and most restaurants and bars are closed. As a result of these actions, alcohol purchases have shifted to Alko and grocery stores.

Alko is the only store in Finland that retails beer over 5.5 percent alc/vol, wine (except in vineyards) and spirits.

According to Alko’s press release, passenger imports is 15% and liquor sale in the restaurants is about 10% of total alcohol consumption.

Monthly sales in March increased by 9.3% from twelve months earlier. And equally, strong growth figures were recorded in January-March sales, 4.6% in liter sales.

Leena Laitinen, CEO of Alko said in a press release, “This is an exceptional case. Previously part of the alcohol purchased through passenger imports and restaurants has been purchased from Alko. This will affect the sales figures for March.”

Alko's liter sales had been falling for last 12 years, 2008-2019. The previous good sales year was 2007, which has also remained the number one sales year in Alko's history.

Examined by product group, demand increased in almost all products. “Sales of rosé wines increased by 27%, red wines by 20% and white wines by 14%. Of the types of packaging, tap packaging grew and in wine bottles price range is between 13 to 20 euros. Sales of brewery products, non-alcoholic, sparkling wines and liqueur wines decreased.”

LESS IS BETTER

Marja Aho, Sustainability Manager, said: “We spend more time with our families at home than usual. In this exceptional situation, it is important to take responsibility for making everyday as normal as possible. Regarding alcohol, less is better now.

Alko's stores distribute Service Cards if you or your loved one's alcohol consumption is being considered. The card contains contact information for professional help.
