Tampere residents in need of a bicycle may be lucky enough to get a cheap one.

The Tampere police announced on Tuesday that on Thursday 3 September it will auction 170 bicycles.

These are mainly bicycles that have been found and handed over by the public to the lost property office, where they have not been claimed by their owners.

According to the Finnish Lost Property Act, if the owner of a lost property item does not claim it from the police within three months, it becomes the property of the finder, with a few exceptions. If the finder too fails to claim the item within three months, the property is forfeit to the state.

The bicycle auction will be held at noon in the main courtyard of the police station located at Sorinkatu, 12. People who are interested in participating may access the place between 11:45 and 12:30.

Mandatory use of a mask

Due to the health emergency due to the coronavirus pandemic, only the first 100 people who arrive will be able to access the place. The police will ask attendees to wear protective masks at all times and respect safety distance.

Only cash payments will be accepted, police said in a press release. Due to the auction, the lost and found office will be closed on Thursday.
