The job training fever continued last year. And, according to the official figures, it was a few degrees more intense among women than among men.
A total of 123,100 new students attended education leading to a vocational qualification during the calendar year 2018. Of them, 52% were women, according to Statistics Finland's education figures.
Of those new students, 85,000 attended initial vocational education, 27,300 further vocational education and 10,800 specialist vocational education. Despite the high demand for educational services, there were 3% fewer new students than in the previous year.
The main fields of study
An interesting aspect when analyzing the results of the sample is that the vast majority of new students (almost 70%) chose fields in which there is a high demand for labor.
According to Statistics Finland, 26% of the new students chose to study technology, 23% service industries and 19% health and welfare.
Another interesting aspect is the large fluctuation in the shares of men and women viewed by fields of education. For example in the field of health and welfare, the share of women was 83% and in the field of information and communication technology it was 14%.

In 2018, there were 220,700 students in initial vocational education provided by educational institutions. This was 3% less than the year before. 34,600 students attended further vocational education and 9,600 specialist vocational education.
Besides that, 57,400 students participated in apprenticeship training.
