There is already a date for the entry into force of the discount of 20 cents per liter of fuel announced this Monday by the prime minister, Pedro Sánchez, to mitigate the effects of inflation.

The measure was approved on Tuesday by the Spanish Council of Ministers as part of a € 16-billion package in response to the harmful effects of the war in Ukraine on the Spanish economy.

The Minister of Finance and Public Function, María Jesús Montero, announced on Tuesday morning, before the government meeting, that the reduction of 20 euro cents per liter of fuel will apply when refueling from Friday 1 April.

The minister also said that this discount will be additional to the one already implemented by the oil companies.

"The (oil) operators are already making offers that allow general citizens an additional five cents (reduction), that is, 25 cents, and another ten cents for carriers," Montero explained in an interview on Telecinco.

Support for families, companies

The Finance Minister asked the citizens to also be "attentive" to the offers that the oil companies are applying.

The Spanish government hopes that this reduction in the price of fuel, which will be applied between April 1 and June 30, will make it possible for families to maintain purchasing power.

The authorities also hope that it will help companies to overcome the difficulties derived from the increase in fuel costs.

The package of measures agreed by the coalition government includes other benefits, such as the cap imposed on rent increases and a temporary increase in the amount of the Spanish Minimum Vital Income (MVI).
