Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus, the head of the World Health Organization (WHO), has gone into self-quarantine, he announced late on Sunday, after coming into contact with someone who tested positive for Covid-19.
"I have been identified as a contact of someone who has tested positive for #COVID19. I am well and without symptoms but will self-quarantine over the coming days, in line with WHO protocols, and work from home," he wrote on Twitter.
"It is critically important that we all comply with health guidance. This is how we will break chains of #COVID19 transmission, suppress the virus, and protect health systems," he continued.
Follow expert advice
Speaking in Geneva on Monday, Tedros urged leaders around the world to follow expert advice amid a "concerning rise in cases and hospitalizations" in Europe and North America.
Ethiopia's former foreign minister, an infectious diseases expert who took office at the WHO in 2017, has been at the forefront of global efforts to fight the pandemic.
