THL reports 266 new coronavirus cases, 1 death in Helsinki

The largest number of new cases have been recorded in the hospital districts of Helsinki and Uusimaa, Southwest Finland, North Ostrobothnia, Pirkanmaa, Vaasa, Kymenlaakso, Central Finland, North Savo, Lapland and Kanta-Häme.

Finnish health authorities reported Friday 266 new coronavirus infections and 1 death recorded in the past 24 hours.

According to the data released by the National Institute for Health and Welfare (THL), the fatality occurred in the Helsinki hospital catchment area.

With this increase, the total number of infected people in Finland since the start of the pandemic rises to 17,385.

To date, the Nordic country has also reported 362 deaths associated with the Covid-19 disease.

The vast majority (over 95%) of the deceased had one or more long-term illnesses.

The epidemic has not increased total mortality in Finland. Deaths of working-age people are very rare, and no deaths of children and young people have occurred, THL remarks.

More patients in hospital care

The number of people hospitalized for coronavirus increased by 3 compared to the previous report, to 68. In turn, the number of patients in intensive care is currently 13, which is 2 less than 48 hours earlier.

Incidence of new cases

According to THL, during the most recent fourteen-day monitoring period (21 October – 3 November) 2,773 new cases were diagnosed. The incidence of new cases in relation to the population was 50 cases per 100,000 inhabitants.

But according to the latest updates by the European Centre for Disease Prevention and Control (ECDC), which monitors the development of the epidemic across Europe, currently the incidence of new cases in Finland is 51.9 new cases per 100,000 residents.

An estimated 12,700 people in Finland have already recovered from the disease, which is about 75% of reported cases, THL says.
