Coronavirus infections continue to spread uncontrollably throughout Spain.

The number infections and the incidence rate reported by the health authorities broke a new record on Tuesday: the Ministry of Health notified 99,671 new infections and 114 deaths. The cumulative incidence rose 154.41 points, to 1,360.62 cases per 100,000 inhabitants in the last 14-day period.

The only positive news, if it can be said so, is that the brutal increase in the number of infections is not moving proportionally in the number of hospitalizations. That does not mean, however, that authorities and health experts are not concerned.

According to official figures, on Tuesday 9,852 patients were hospitalized for coronavirus, 322 more than on Monday. The pressure in the ICU also continues to rise with 18.71% of the beds occupied by Covid-19 patients compared to 18.26% the day before.

Until Tuesday, 6,032,297 people have been infected and 89,253 have died since the beginning of the pandemic, according to the count of the Ministry of Health.

In this context, thirteen Spanish autonomous regions plus the North African cities of Ceuta and Melilla have requested assistance from the Mobile Vaccination Teams of the army.

According to government information, the Ministry of Defense will initially mobilize 1,000 soldiers, who will make up the initial 150 teams to reinforce vaccination against the Covid-19 within coordinated actions with the Ministry of Health.

The aim is to promote vaccination in people over 12 years of age not yet vaccinated and in people for whom a booster dose is authorized: over 40 years of age who have completed 6 months since their second dose or those who were vaccinated with Janssen.

The government thus implements what was agreed by the Prime Minister together with the regional leaders at the Conference of (regional) Presidents held on 22 December.
