Schools should not reopen, Foreigner.fi readers say
Foreigner.fi will ask a different question about Finland and Finnish lifestyle every Friday on its official Twitter account @foreignerfi
According to the data released by the Ministry of Social Affairs and Health, during the last monitoring period (from 27 July to 2 August) a total of 74 new Covid-19 infections were reported to the communicable diseases register.
In the week before, the number of new reported cases was 51, showing an increase in the number of cases reported in the two previous weeks: 42 cases in the week beginning 13 July and 38 cases in the week beginning 6 July.
In other words, the number of new infections is relatively low, but has nearly doubled from a month ago.
Therefore, Foreigner.fi asked the readers in a Twitter poll, “Finland will reopen schools next week, although coronavirus cases are increasing. Do you think it's a good idea?”
In the poll, respondents were given two options, which were 'Yes' and 'No'.
The mini poll was answered by 87 readers and 60.9% of the readers think schools should not open. 39.1% voted ‘Yes'.
About the reader’s comments, one reader said that, “Previous data in Finland has shown that open schools last spring had little to no effect, that’s my thinking process.”
However, another comment from Facebook, “No now we are risking the lives of young children...! They can not be replaced...”
