In France, wearing a protective face mask in shops, banks or even market halls will be mandatory from Monday, France's Health Minister Olivier Veran said on Twitter on Saturday.
Rules of conduct such as keeping a safe distance and testing will still remain essential in the fight against the coronavirus pandemic, Veran continued.
President Emmanuel Macron had personally announced in a TV interview on Tuesday that wearing a mask in enclosed public spaces could be required from August 1.
Prime Minister Jean Castex announced a little later that it should come into force earlier.
In France - as in other countries - a second wave of the pandemic is feared.

Masks are already required on public transport. Shops and other facilities have so far been able to decide for themselves whether people have to wear a mask or not. Many of France's tourist attractions have already made it mandatory.
The authorities in France have warned of an increase in coronavirus cases, albeit at a low level. France was hit hard by the pandemic, with around 30,000 deaths.
