The number of coronavirus infections detected worldwide has risen to more than 400 million since the pandemic began, according to the latest data.

The Johns Hopkins University monitor recorded the latest grim milestone just over a month after 300 million cases were reached.

Worldwide, official tallies place the death toll at around 5.8 million. However, observers expect the true numbers are significantly higher as many infections and deaths go unreported.

There are also minor differences in the figures available. The numbers shown by the Johns Hopkins University (JHU) are marginally higher than the official figures of the World Health Organization (WHO), which recently recorded some 397 million infections worldwide.

Meanwhile some 10 billion vaccines against Covid-19 have been administered worldwide, according to both the WHO and JHU.

US tops the infections ranking

The US has recorded the highest number of confirmed infections in absolute numbers, with 77 million in a population of around 330 million.

India has recorded around 42 million cases, among a population of about 1.3 billion.

Brazil has reported almost 27 million cases, with a population of 210 million.
