Four million people have died after contracting coronavirus worldwide since the pandemic began, according to an update from Johns Hopkins University on Wednesday.

The new milestone means recorded deaths related to coronavirus rose from three to four million in just under three months.

Around 185 million confirmed coronavirus infections have been recorded worldwide, the data shows.

Experts assume there are far more unrecorded coronavirus infections and deaths globally.

The Johns Hopkins website is regularly updated and therefore shows higher figures than the World Health Organization.

Numbers revised

In some cases, numbers have later been revised downwards.

The United States has the highest number of coronavirus deaths in terms of absolute figures, at around 605,000. The country has a population of some 330 million.

Brazil is in second with 525,000 deaths, and India has recorded some 400,000.
