The first batch of the Pfizer/BioNtech coronavirus vaccine is already in Finland.

Mia Kontio, an expert in the National Institute for Health and Welfare (THL), confirmed to the National Broadcasting Company (YLE) that the first shipment has arrived in the country as planned, amid strong security measures.

"The shipment we were promised has arrived in Finland," Kontio told Yle.

The lot contains about 9,750 doses of the Pfizer/Biontech vaccine. That is the amount that fits in the transport box received, this expert explained.

The vaccine shipment is divided into five parts according to special areas of responsibility. Some of them will be transported to central hospitals later this weekend.

Vaccination to start on Sunday

Finland announced last week that, like most EU countries, it has scheduled the first vaccinations for Sunday 27 December.

The distribution of the vaccines has been carried out among strong security measures after Interpol warned that organized crime groups could be interested in stealing the shipments, and then selling the vaccines on the black market.
