Finland reported on Monday 95 new cases of coronavirus (koronavirus, in Finnish). Those are the laboratory-diagnosed infections detected in the last 24 hours. With them, the total number of cases increases by 7.7% compared to Sunday and rises to 1,313 infected people.

However, the National Institute for Health and Welfare (THL) admits the actual number of infections might be much higher, since generally only people with severe respiratory symptoms are sampled. People showing mild symptoms are usually advised to stay at home.

Those 1,313 infections are just the cases which have been reported by hospital districts to the national Register of Communicable Diseases. Of them, 843 cases have been detected in the region of Helsinki-Uusimaa (the capital city and its surroundings). Those are 33 cases more than last Sunday in the capital region.

So far, 64.2% of the total number of infections have been detected in the region of Helsinki-Uusimaa, which last weekend was isolated from the rest of the country.

Outside the capital area, there are also high numbers of cases in Pirkanmaa (the Tampere region, 106 infections), Southwest Finland (Turku area, 56 cases), Northern Ostrobothnia (Oulu region, 56 cases) and Central Finland (around Jyväskylä, 50 infections).

Until Sunday, THL had reported 11 deaths caused by coronavirus.

No virus free region

Since Sunday, when Kainuu reported its first case, there is no region in Finland free of coronavirus.

Gender differences are also about to disappear as regards infected people. Currently, 51.9% of the infected people are men and 48.1% are women. When the epidemic started, those rates were 61% for men and 39% for women.

The highest ratios of affected people are in Helsinki Uusimaa (50 infected per 100,000 inhabitants), in Pirkanmaa (19.9 per 100,000) and in Central Finland (19.8 per 100,000).

This time it took hours to THL to bring to light its daily report about the coronavirus situation in the country. The agency had promised to publish new data every day at 9:30, but on Monday the report was delayed until noon.
