Estonia on Friday posted a record number of 241 new cases of the coronavirus in the past 24 hours, most of which were in the capital, Talinn, and surrounding areas.

The country's previous record daily increase was 208 cases.

Infection levels have risen throughout the country, leading health official Ullar Lanno told a local radio broadcaster.

Lanno recommended calling off all public events until further notice.

Social Minister Tanel Kiik said the government would discuss new measures and restrictions to stem the spread of the virus on Tuesday.

So far, Estonia, a country of 1.3 million, has recorded 5,705 cases of the virus and a death toll of 73.

While case numbers may be increasing, the country has one of the lowest rates of infection in Europe, according to the European health authority ECDC.
