The number of cases of coronavirus reported by the health authorities rebounded on Tuesday and Wednesday in Finland, following the Midsummer holiday celebration and the news of numerous infections contracted during trips to Russia to watch the Euro 2020 football matches.
According to the Finnish National Institute for Health an Welfare (THL), on Wednesday 30 June 355 new diagnosed infections were reported.
That is approximately one third of the 1,146 cases diagnosed in the Nordic country during the past week.
The number of positive tests has increased significantly in the last two days, in which more than twice as many infections were recorded than in previous days.
According to THL's figures, 123 cases were reported on Thursday 24; 145 cases on Friday; 125 on Saturday; 95 cases on Sunday; 84 on Monday, 219 on Tuesday and 355 cases on Wednesday.
The incidence of new cases has also increased to 26.7 per 100,000 inhabitants in the past 2 weeks, up from 23.1 in the previous 14-day period.
Delta variant
The positive news is that this rebound has not been reflected in an increase in deaths and hospitalizations. According to the health agency, there has only been 1 death related to the Covid-19 disease in the past week and the number of patients admitted to hospitals remains stable.
At the time of writing this article, there were 38 people hospitalized throughout the country due to Covid-19, of which 7 were in intensive care units.
So far, Finland has found 338 coronavirus cases caused by the highly infectious Delta variant, originated in India.
