In China, another city has been sent into a lockdown after the occurrence of only a few coronavirus cases under the country's strict zero-Covid policy.

According to the authorities, the approximately 1 million inhabitants of the eastern Chinese city of Yuzhou in Henan province have only been allowed to leave their homes in exceptional circumstances since Monday evening.

In addition, mass tests were ordered for the entire population. The measures were decided after three local coronavirus infections occurred in the city.

Similar measures have been in place for almost two weeks in the Chinese metropolis of Xi'an, where the lockdown will not be lifted until there are no new infections.

China has largely got the virus under control by using a policy of dealing with infection clusters as soon as they emerge with strict control measures.

For more than a year, the pandemic situation in the People's Republic has been much better than in many other countries.

Nationwide, 108 new coronavirus cases were reported on Tuesday, most of them in Xi'an. Compared to the previous week, however, the number of new infections there has declined somewhat.
